Very little can recapture the childhood glory of opening your first video game console, whether it was an original NES or a PlayStation. But GameStop is giving those gems, some of which are 20 to 30 years old, a new life in its Refurbished Operation Center.
Mashable toured its Grapevine, Texas facility to see how these consoles are rescued from the grave.
GameStop began accepting NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, Sony PlayStation and Sega Dreamcast consoles from two locations — New York and Birmingham, Alabama — in April. Since then, it’s added six new locations: Chicago, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Orlando, Los Angeles and Central Texas, including stores in Dallas, Austin and San Antonio.
Gamestop’s John Haes, senior director of pre-owned merchandise, said the program is already successful enough for the company to start rolling it out to other markets, though they aren’t ready for a nationwide launch yet.

There are currently 20 people working in the retro console section of the R.O.C., which is just a small outpost in GameStop’s large center that handles everything from modern consoles to cell phones. But Haes said that number is growing as more trade-ins happen.
Those employees not only refurbish the consoles, but also put them through a quality assurance program to make sure every piece works, Haes said.
GameStop has refurbed several hundred classic consoles at this point, and Haes said they are often more simple to repair compared to their more advanced, modern brethren. He said the two biggest challenges often come from sourcing the parts, like the lasers and case pieces, and time’s wear and tear.
“For the NES, it’s often a matter of cleaning the 72-pin connector,” he said. “Those cartridge-based consoles are hard to kill.”
The most common repair for disc-based consoles like the PSOne and the Dreamcast is replaceing the lasers that read game discs.
The quality assurance process, which is not just “playing games,” involves making sure each part of the console works as it should. Haes said everything is tested, from making sure games load and play, to the audio and video connections.
The QA process extends to older games too. All the older game cartridges — from Battletoads to Banjo-Kazooie — are tested to assure both play and save correctly, and their contacts and cases are cleaned.
For those in participating markets, Haes said anyone interested in trading in a console can do so if the console can turn it on, and if they have the power cord, A/V cable and controller.
